Had to apply a bit of vegetable oil to the hinges for smoother closing, but overall, it's been a great addition. It does need batteries to open automatically, but you can manually use it if needed. While you can't really toss trash in from a distance and expect it to catch, the hand sensor is responsive for normal use. It's been a significant upgrade for us.
